OpenAI’s week-long shutdown & Meta's AI talent strategy

This week, the AI world paused to reflect. OpenAI, one of the sector’s most influential players, declared a full company-wide shutdown lasting one week.

A pause for recovery and reflection

The move was prompted by employee burnout after months of intense work. Mark Chen, Chief Scientist at OpenAI, revealed that teams were logging 80-hour weeks, pushing to stay ahead in the competitive AI race.

Leadership saw the break as not only a recovery period but a chance to refocus and protect team well-being.

Meta’s bold recruitment strategy

At the same time, Meta has launched an aggressive hiring campaign. At least four senior OpenAI researchers have joined Meta’s new Superintelligence division

Compensation packages reportedly exceed 100 million dollars, with engineers receiving access to more computing power, autonomy, and high-impact AGI projects.

This surge in hiring reflects a new benchmark in AI compensation. Across the board, AI researchers and engineers are commanding record-high salaries, sometimes rivaling those of startup founders.

OpenAI’s response to the talent shift

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged the difficulty of competing

with Meta’s offers. Still, he reaffirmed the company's long-standing mission to develop safe, beneficial artificial general intelligence.

While that mission remains core, OpenAI is now reviewing its compensation models and internal culture to retain top talent.
